Toronto December 2011

Hello

I have responded to a couple of people who had seen my posting of September. Have asked them to write on my email. Nothing much happening. My chair has been giving some problems. The metal frame is coming loose since some screws have snapped. I am trying to get it fixed through the manufacturer or dealer. The guy from Shoppers Drug Mart did come once.

The other news is that we has the first meeting of our ataxia group on Nov 6th Sunday. I hope we are able to make this a regular thing - but it is difficult to round up people. Everyone seems busy with church or kids or something. Everyone seems more keen to arrange something virtual like skype or something. We have more than 15 members now, so that is a good number.

Bye for now. Shall update later.

September 2011

It is 9/13.
2 days after 9/11. The TV is full of 9/11 stuff. It is difficult to escape.

Slow deterioration continues. Still managing to get to work on my chair. My office building is one of those Heritage ones, so they are exempt from providing ramps and automatic doors. I can see their point. There is a wonderful old area in Toronto called St.Lawrence Market. It has one of those old buildings which is a real beauty. They have now installed a new modern automatic sliding door. Very efficient and disability friendly, but ugly as hell. I guess it is difficult to blend old world style with mod cons. I don't know whether to applaud or criticize.

Last weekend, a small group of us ataxians got together for a coffee at a Tim Hortons in Markham. There were 3 of us affected ones and 1 family member. It was a great opportunity to get out of the routine and meet people.

We are trying to set up a Toronto chapter of NAF - National Ataxia Federation.

Toronto in Summer

It is early summer here. Everyone around is wearing shorts. I cannot wear them since I have lost a lot of weight and would look quite funny. A couple of people had visited this blog and left comments. Since they had provided email addresses, I could get back to them.

I am getting more regular help from a healthcare worker. Trying to be as independent as possible.

I met a couple of people in this area with similar ataxia conditions. Met 1-2 of them and had coffee. Also joined a Facebook group called Internaf.

One more spring time in Toronto

It is mid April. This winter has been slow to leave. It has been officially spring for a month but it is still ccld and windy outside. Hopefully things will soon change.

Things have been busy where I work. One of my fellow workers quit so things have been busier. The "season" normally lasts till end June.

Visited the neurologist at Toronto Western last month. Asked him about a new drug I have been reading about - Riluzole. He is nsupposed to investigate and let me know. I guess I will have to remind.

I have been getting the services of a personal healthcare worker off and on. He helps me with my day to day stuff a little bit.

January in Bangalore

I made a long delayed visit to India. I was flying after 3 years, so was quite nervous about it. I flew Lufthansa from Toronto to Bangalore via Frankfurt. Used the airline wheelchair service throughout which was quite efficient, though there was a lot of waiting at various places. I get back on Feb 10, so have to repeat the process all over again.

India is difficult for someone with a disability. There is no concept of accessibility. Some of the newer buildings have ramps, but one cannot use the sidewalks for wheelchairs.

Nothing medical on this trip. Hope one has no need to go to a doctor.
